What Causes Age Spots? | Ask Nicole
I am frequently asked, What causes age spots? It seems like this common condition, also known as hyperpigmentation, liver spots,
solar lentigines and melasma, is a primary concern of most men and women today. The primary reason for this is that these brown spots are one of the
most visible signs of aging skin.
Those brown spots and patches are a result, simply, of sun damage to the skin. Although we are born with natural defenses from sun damage, as we age, our skin loses its ability to defend itself against the sun's rays. This damage results in the skin's inability to control the amount of melanin, or pigment, released into the skin. This leaves the skin with an uneven tone, and a more visibly aged look. That being said, you don't have to be "old" to see this type of damage on the skin. It has been reported that age spots are observed in as many as 90% of whites older than 60 years and in 20% of whites younger than 35 years.
What Can I Do?One of the most important things you can do is protect your skin from UV rays by wearing sunscreen and avoiding the tanning booth. If you can't stand the way you look without a tan, wear a bronzer or self-tanner! These days they work amazingly well, and you'll be happier with the result in the long run.A popular, and reportedly effective, solution to hyperpigmented skin is laser treatments by a reputable doctor. That being said, many people either do not want to subject their skin to this type of treatment or they do not want the expense. Even those that do have this type of treatment need consistent follow-up by using appropriate daily skincare. Topical treatments do exist that allow for gentle pigmentation removal plus prevention from their re-occurence, and getting a professional skin care treatment by a knowledgable, licensed professional will help as well. Diligent application of these products is necessary for the best results!
