Do Expensive Anti Aging Skin Care Products Work The Best?| Top 10 Skincare Mistakes and Myths Series
Anti aging skin care products are some of the best selling in the industry, because we are contstantly bombarded with the idea of looking younger. And hey,
in my opinion, taking care of yourself and your skin and wanting to look better is totally fine. That being said, the beauty industry really preys on people's
beliefs and insecurities when it comes to anti aging skin care products, and ridiculously expensive products are the result. But are they worth it?
Myth #2: Expensive Anti Aging Skin Care Products Work the BestNow don't get me wrong. I am not saying that cheapo products are the way to go. What I am saying is that you would be shocked - shocked! - if you realized the unbelievably inexpensive (read: cheap!) ingredients so many of the "luxury" brands out there use, and mark it the products just because they can. One of my favorites is a 2 oz jar of "miracle cream" (Creme de la Mer) that costs over $200 and claims that its not the ingredients that makes the product special, its the "fermentation process" that gives it its wonderful miracle properties. Give me a break! Read here about how this "miracle cream's" ingredients are really only worth a small fraction of its ultimate cost.Another incredibly expensive product, Chanel's Sublimage (depending on the product in the line, may cost up to $450), touts its exclusive technique of "polyfractioning" a rare Madagascar flower to obtain supposedly amazing results. The website states: "It starts with one unique plant -- the Vanilla Planifolia -- unearthed in the farthest reaches of Madagascar. A unique process created by CHANEL Research harnesses the power of this potent botanical fruit for targeted de-aging action. With the exclusive ingredient, Planifolia PFA*, wrinkles, loss of firmness, dehydration, lack of radiance and inconsistency in pigmentation are pinpointed at once, rendering skin revitalized, regenerated, radiant." First of all, there is NO independent scientific evidence that this particular plant possesses any significant anti-aging properties over and above any other ingredient out there. And while Madagascar vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron, you can purchase it for well less than the $300 - $400 price tag Chanel puts on its product would justify. In fact, the remainder of the list of ingredients, while effective in varying degrees, still doesn't make up for it. Paying for the name? You betcha. OK, Chanel will now say that its the "process" by which this ingredient is extracted that makes it so amazing. Huh? What does that mean? There is still no evidence that vanilla planifola in and of itself possesses significant anti aging properties - or at least, more significant than other ingredients, period! Even With Less Expensive Products, Check the Ingredients: What are You Getting, Really? So many of the anti aging skin care products (both expensive and cheap) out there use a miniscule amount of what we would consider "effective" ingredients, while loading up the list with things like water (the first ingredient in so, so many products it is ridiculous- and of course, it does nothing for you), Cyclopentasiloxane (a silicone that has no skin beneficial properties but does make it appear better short term), perfume (not the best thing to be using on the face, especially those of you with sensitive skin), etc. Examples of companies that do this are Olay, Clinique and Lancome (plus the ones mentioned above, and many many others). When a Company Claims a Miracle Ingredient, Be SkepticalUltimately, when companies start talking about their "miracle" ingredients, stop and think. Like the Chanel example above, does that ingredient really mean anything? Or is it just a play on words? Does it work better than other, tried-and-true ingredients out there? Is the only evidence for the amazing-ness of the product the evidence the company has? (oh please) Anti aging skincare is a multi-million dollar industry, and companies are not held to a high standard for their claims.
