How To Exfoliate | Get Glowing Skin
Knowing how to exfoliate skin properly is a key step in getting glowing, naturally healthy skin.
Exfoliating is one of the least done and most misunderstood steps in skincare. Often I have customers that completely skip this essential step, or use products with ingredients way too harsh for their skin type.
How To Exfoliate: The Steps
First, you should utilize a cleanser that contains either fruit enzymes or a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid to loosen the "glue" that holds dead skin cells together. Next, make sure that you have an exfoliant that is proper for your skin type and condition. For the face, use exfoliators that do not contain harsh abrasives: the main components should be in the "chemical" or natural exfoliating properties of the product. Similar to cleansers, facial exfoliation should include ingredients that loosen and dissolve dead skin cells, although it is recommended that these ingredients are in higher concentrations than your daily cleanser, since the reason you exfoliate is to get rid of deeper layers of dead skin. That being said, you don't want to do this on a daily basis, because the result of doing so is major skin irritation. Using these types of exfoliators means you will need to leave them on for a few minutes to allow for them to work. Rinse all exfoliants liberally and follow with your night treatment or moisturizer.
Don't Overdo It
Another common issue I deal with when speaking to clients about exfoliation is that you must not overdo it. Anyone that has spoken with me knows that I do not agree with microdermabrasion, which in my view is overly harsh for the skin and results most often in patchiness and dryness, the exact opposite of what we want to achieve: smooth, glowing skin! For this reason, I DO NOT recommend any exfoliator for the face that includes "diamonds" or "almonds" or "walnuts" or anything of this nature. Your exfoliatior should leave your skin with a smooth texture, period! Here's to Glowing Skin! --Nicole
