What Is Botox? | Ask NicoleCustomers often ask me, "what is Botox? What risks and benefits do I get from this treatment?" Since many customers come in with the wrong idea about what Botox injections do, I will try in this article to explain how it works. Note: this is not the opinion of a qualified medical professional, it is based on my own research.
Is it Really Botulism?According to the BOTOX® Cosmetic website, Botox "is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium."
Now this is a little confusing, because it raises the question: is Botox a protein or is it botulism?
My understanding is that it is both...its just that the preparation of the drug Botox does not contain live botulinum bacteria, yet the neurotxins that make the bacteria paralyze the muscles are still intact. So, in my view, the answer to the question, what is botox, is ultimately that the big difference between Botox and what we would normally associate with a deadly case of botulism poisoning is that Botox does not contain the live form of the botulism bacteria. This is important, because it means that the Botox solution injected into your body does not have the ability to reproduce, since it isn't alive. Therefore, the concentration of the toxin can't increase beyond what is injected into your body by what should be a medical professional that thoroughly understands how to properly inject Botox with the proper dosage.
